To gain a thorough understanding of the population's health, Public Health Bonaire collects data on the health of citizens on Bonaire. The frequency of this depends on the subject. For certain topics, we want to know the situation on Bonaire on a weekly basis: such as the numbers of dengue, influenza, or stomach complaints. We look at other topics periodically: such as sexually transmitted infections, chronic diseases, lifestyle, and healthcare utilization.
Public Health Bonaire conducts health surveys. They often do this in collaboration with organizations from other countries, such as PAHO, CARPHA, RIVM, the Mullier Institute, JOGG, and various universities. Every four years, all information is compiled into a health report. Based on the results, health priorities are established for the following four years. These health priorities are incorporated into policy (for example, the National Health Policy Document) and discussed with partners: such as the Executive Council, healthcare providers, and citizens.
Public Health Bonaire also assists in the development of specific health policy. They provide advice to other public health organizations and collaborate to improve health. For example, in the event of disasters, health risks, or unhealthy behavior.
Health programs are essential for promoting health and prevention. Thorough evaluation of both the effects achieved, and the process is crucial to understanding what works, for whom, and why. This enables Public Health Bonaire to improve programs in a targeted manner and to make policy more effective and targeted.
