Respiratory infections (such as flu & coronavirus)

Respiratory infections are diseases of the nose, throat, or lungs. Examples include the common cold, the flu, COVID-19, or pneumonia. These diseases usually spread through airborne droplets, such as by coughing or sneezing. Some respiratory infections can be serious, especially for the elderly or people with weakened health.

What does Public Health Bonaire do?

  • You can visit Public Health Bonaire annually for vaccinations against certain respiratory infections. There are vaccines against influenza and COVID-19. For more information about these vaccinations, see the page: Medical risk groups
  • Public Health Bonaire helps prevent the spread of respiratory infections. We provide advice to residents, schools, (cruise) ships, healthcare institutions, and healthcare providers. This includes, for example, advice on hygiene and vaccination.
  • Public Health Bonaire monitors the frequency of respiratory infections on the island by collecting data from laboratories (such as positive test results) and general practitioners' practices. Public Health Bonaire uses this to determine if more people are becoming ill than normal, so that we can take timely action.

Flu (influenza)

The flu is a disease caused by the influenza virus. Many people think they have the flu when they suffer from a cough and a stuffy or runny nose. Generally, this only lasts a few days and is often not the flu, but a cold. The flu can last 1 to 2 weeks and has more severe symptoms, including high fever, severe muscle pain, and fatigue.

Corona (COVID-19)

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causes the disease COVID-19. Many people confuse COVID-19 with a common cold, especially when they suffer from coughing, a stuffy nose, and a sore throat. These are often mild symptoms that pass quickly, but COVID-19 can also cause more severe symptoms such as high fever, severe muscle pain, fatigue, and in some cases, breathing difficulties.
