GGD Bonaire / Salubridat Públiko waarschuwt voor warmste periode van het jaar

Protect yourself and each other from the heat!

GGD Bonaire / Public Health asks residents and visitors to Bonaire to pay extra attention to their health during hot spells.

“Although it is warm on Bonaire all year round, we see higher temperatures especially from August through October. Due to climate change, hot spells are occurring more frequently worldwide and lasting longer. On Bonaire, too, this calls for attention to the health effects of heat. By preparing well for the changing climate and looking out for one another, we can limit the effects of heat and keep Bonaire healthy,” according to GGD Bonaire / Public Health.

During hot spells, it’s important to remain vigilant, especially toward vulnerable people in your community. Simple measures can help prevent heat-related health issues. Possible health issues include: fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, fainting, or loss of consciousness.

Protect yourself and each other from the heat!

GGD Bonaire / Public Health offers the following advice:

  • Protect your body from the sun. Seek shade as much as possible and protect yourself from direct exposure to the sun. Avoid the hottest hours between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Pay extra attention to babies and young children. They are more susceptible to heat-related issues.
  • Pay extra attention to older adults and people with chronic conditions. Check in on them regularly, especially if they live alone.
  • Keep your body cool. Seek relief from the heat and stay in a cool environment as much as possible.
  • Drink plenty of water frequently. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
  • Avoid exercising in direct sunlight. Plan physical activity for cooler times of the day whenever possible.
  • Are you feeling unwell due to the heat? Seek shade and drink water. If these measures don’t help or your symptoms persist, contact your primary care physician.

GGD Bonaire / Public Health remains committed to prevention and health awareness regarding heat. We inform residents about the risks of hot spells and work to better prepare the community for the heat.

With this approach, GGD Bonaire / Public Health aims—as part of adapting to the changing climate (climate adaptation)—to contribute to greater awareness, better preparedness, and the prevention of health problems during hot spells.
